My name is Anna Gadzhikurbanova and I’m a studio ceramic artist based in Austin, TX. Through functional pottery and sculptural carved vessels inspired by natural forms and patterns, I aim to explore the beauty of clay and glaze, the interplay of light and shadow, and the balance between structure and spontaneity.

My story

Born and raised in Moscow, Russia I obtained a clinical psychology education, however after working as a psychological counsellor for several years I found myself deeply engaged in artistic self-expression. At first it was all about dancing and movement practices, then photography and finally ceramic art.

In 2018 my husband and I moved from Russia to Japan where I was truly amazed and inspired by Japanese aesthetics and ceramic art. Despite the language barriers I was passionately studying pottery in several ceramic schools from different Japanese artists. At the same time, I was studying composition, colour theory and ceramic art at Russian online schools and making connections with Russian artists through internet and during visits to my home country. Meanwhile I started creating and selling my own works, making commissions and participating in shows.

In the beginning of 2022 I gave birth to my son and in the end of the same year our family moved to Austin, TX. Due to the pregnancy, taking care of a small child and relocation to another continent I wasn’t able to practice pottery for 2 years. In 2023 I equipped our garage as a small ceramic studio so I was able to make my work there and continue my ceramic journey.
